Meaning

At End School Zone, you have reached the boundary of the designated school zone. Oregon also identifies this sign as one way its reduced school speed zone ends. The federal manual distinguishes a school-zone endpoint from the more specific End School Speed Limit sign; the two can coincide, but they are not identical messages.

What to do

In Oregon, recognize the school speed zone’s endpoint at End School Zone or another posted speed sign. Keep checking for crossing children and guards. A sign describing the zone boundary does not tell you that every child has left the road or that a crossing guard’s instruction can be ignored.

Where it is used

The federal manual places this sign at the downstream end of the designated school zone. Where a reduced-speed zone ends at that same boundary, End School Zone may also serve in place of End School Speed Limit. Read the endpoint along your direction of travel, rather than judging the boundary by the school building alone.

A sign to tell apart

School Speed Limit When Flashing introduces the displayed reduced limit and its active periods. End School Zone identifies the zone’s end. The beginning assembly and the endpoint do different jobs, so the beacon condition and the boundary both matter when interpreting the school speed zone.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. According to Oregon’s handbook, which signs can mark the end of the school speed zone?

  1. Only the school building’s driveway sign.
  2. End School Zone or another posted speed sign.
  3. Any pedestrian warning sign.

Answer: B. End School Zone or another posted speed sign.

Oregon defines the zone by the school speed signs and identifies these signed endpoints.

2. An Oregon school crossing guard signals you to stop for children. When should you move again?

  1. As soon as you see an End School Zone sign.
  2. While a child remains in the crosswalk if your lane looks clear.
  3. After the children have cleared the crosswalk.

Answer: C. After the children have cleared the crosswalk.

Obey the crossing guard and remain stopped while the children clear. A zone boundary is not a release from that instruction.
