Meaning

School warns you about a school area or zone and the possibility of children near the road. A companion plaque changes the location information: an advance warning identifies a crossing ahead, while a downward arrow identifies the crossing itself. Read the assembly, rather than the main panel alone.

What to do

PennDOT tells drivers to reduce speed, watch for crossing children and stop when needed. Children near a school deserve extra attention even before one enters your lane. At a crossing identified by the arrow plaque, be ready to respond to the crossing activity at that location.

Where it is used

The School panel has several federal applications: an approaching school area, the start of a designated zone, or a crossing assembly. AHEAD or distance information identifies an approaching crossing; the downward arrow identifies its location. This is why the smaller panel below the main sign matters to where you look.

A sign to tell apart

School Speed Limit When Flashing gives a specific speed instruction under the conditions displayed. The School warning panel identifies the school context; it does not itself display that numerical limit. PennDOT separately explains its flashing school-zone speed signs, so check for the speed control as well as children.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. What does the downward arrow beneath a School sign identify in Pennsylvania?

  1. A crossing several miles away.
  2. The school-zone crosswalk at that location.
  3. The entrance to a parking garage.

Answer: B. The school-zone crosswalk at that location.

The downward arrow points out the school crossing itself. An advance warning would describe a crossing farther ahead.

2. How should you respond to the School warning in the Pennsylvania handbook?

  1. Reduce speed, watch for crossing children and stop when needed.
  2. Maintain speed unless a child is already in your lane.
  3. Stop only when a school bus is present.

Answer: A. Reduce speed, watch for crossing children and stop when needed.

The school warning calls for attention to children and a lower speed. Stop when the situation requires it.

State variations

The registered 2021 Pennsylvania manual describes both yellow and fluorescent yellow-green school warnings. The current federal manual specifies fluorescent yellow-green for school warning signs. These sources give different design guidance; this study does not establish which older signs remain installed in Pennsylvania.
