Meaning

School Bus Stop Ahead warns of an approaching pickup or drop-off location that may be difficult to see. Florida tells drivers to be ready to stop. The sign is advance notice of the bus stop, rather than the bus’s own command to stop while children board or leave.

What to do

Prepare for a bus or waiting traffic beyond a curve or hill. In the Pennsylvania scenario used below, a bus with flashing red lights and its stop arm out requires a stop at a minimum distance of 10 feet. Stay stopped until the lights are off, the arm is withdrawn and the children are safely clear.

Where it is used

The federal manual recommends this warning before a bus-stop location where a stopped bus cannot be seen far enough away and the stop cannot be relocated to improve visibility. The advance position gives approaching drivers warning before the hidden loading activity or its queue comes into view.

A sign to tell apart

The School panel warns of a school area, zone or crossing context. School Bus Stop Ahead identifies an upcoming bus stop. One does not substitute for the other: expect a stopped bus where the bus-stop warning applies and continue watching for children around school areas more generally.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. How does Florida tell drivers to respond to School Bus Stop Ahead?

  1. Prepare for a possible stop at the upcoming bus-stop location.
  2. Assume the bus will always be visible beside the sign.
  3. Pass waiting traffic because the bus stop is only a warning.

Answer: A. Prepare for a possible stop at the upcoming bus-stop location.

The stop may be unexpected or hidden by a curve or hill. The warning gives you time to prepare.

2. In Pennsylvania, you approach a school bus on your roadway with an extended stop arm and flashing red lights. What is the minimum required stopping distance from the bus?

  1. 5 feet.
  2. 10 feet.
  3. 15 feet.

Answer: B. 10 feet.

The handbook sets a minimum of 10 feet for this situation. Remain stopped until its stated conditions for moving again are met.
