Meaning
Detour Ahead warns that the route will use a different road farther ahead. The federal manual distinguishes this advance notice from signs used to guide drivers along the detour. Virginia groups detour warnings with changes to the traffic route or pattern.
What to do
Reduce speed and prepare for the changed route. Keep reading the work-zone signs and directions as you approach; the advance warning does not mean you should turn at its post.
Where it is used
The warning precedes the diversion onto another road. Its distance message may state feet, miles or Ahead, so read any distance as part of the warning.
A sign to tell apart
Road Work Ahead is a general work-area warning. Detour Ahead identifies the more specific need to follow another road or route. A work zone can exist without a detour.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. Virginia’s detour warning indicates a route change ahead. How should you approach it?
- Accelerate to clear the warning before others arrive.

- Slow and prepare for an unusual traffic pattern.
Answer: C. Slow and prepare for an unusual traffic pattern.
Virginia calls for reducing speed because unusual or hazardous conditions may accompany the route change.
2. Which interpretation fits Detour Ahead and Virginia’s route-change guidance?
- A different road will carry the route farther ahead.
- The warning sign itself marks the end of all road work.
- The sign opens every closed lane to traffic.
Answer: A. A different road will carry the route farther ahead.
The federal sign warns in advance of a diversion, while Virginia explains the need to prepare for the changed route.
