Meaning
End Road Work identifies the end of the work area’s traffic-control sequence. It matters even if you have not seen a crew recently: a moving operation can be farther along the route than the first warning. Empty pavement immediately after a work sign is not proof that the work has ended.
What to do
Connecticut’s manual tells you to keep observing the work-zone signs until the end sign. Continue leaving space around workers, equipment, barriers and other traffic along the way. Do not decide that restrictions have finished merely because the last visible machine is behind you.
Where it is used
The federal manual recommends placing End Road Work near the far end of the termination area. It can share the reverse side of an opposing-direction warning panel or be mounted on a barricade. Read the sign facing your direction rather than using opposite-direction signs to judge where your work zone ends.
A sign to tell apart
Road Work Ahead announces work before you reach it. End Road Work closes the sequence after the work area. Their opposite positions help you recognize whether you are approaching the operation or leaving it; neither should be replaced by a guess based on whether workers happen to be visible.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. In Connecticut, you pass a work-zone warning but do not see a crew immediately. When should you stop treating the posted work-zone signs as part of the operation?
- As soon as no worker is visible.
- After the first construction vehicle.
- When you reach the End Road Work sign.
Answer: C. When you reach the End Road Work sign.
The crew may be part of a moving operation farther ahead. The manual directs you to observe the signs through the end marker.
2. While still inside a Connecticut work zone, how should you manage following space?
- Increase the gap and avoid tailgating.
- Close the gap whenever no workers are visible.
- Drive beside construction equipment to save room.
Answer: A. Increase the gap and avoid tailgating.
Keep space around traffic and work-zone hazards. The manual calls for greater following distance through the operation.
