Meaning

Road Work Ahead gives a general warning of work-related restrictions or obstructions farther along the road. Pennsylvania describes it as notice of road work with a need to reduce speed. It does not identify the particular lane or traffic control you will encounter.

What to do

Reduce speed and pay attention to the work area, equipment and people near the roadway. Use later signs and controls to understand the route through the work zone.

Where it is used

The warning is upstream of the work area or detour on the affected road. Federal guidance also calls for advance notice on a crossroad or major driveway where traffic can enter the work zone.

A sign to tell apart

Road Closed Ahead identifies a closure farther along the route. Road Work Ahead is broader: work may create restrictions without closing the entire road. Read the specific warnings that follow the general work notice.
