Meaning

Divided Highway Ends warns that the physical separation between opposing directions will end ahead. Pennsylvania explains that the next roadway carries traffic both ways. Prepare for approaching vehicles beyond the end of the divider.

What to do

Stay on your side of the centerline and watch for traffic coming toward you. The end of the divider changes the separation between directions; it does not make the whole pavement available to your direction.

Where it is used

The warning appears before a physically divided section ends. Federal guidance treats it as advance notice of two-way traffic, rather than a sign for an ordinary intersection or junction.

A sign to tell apart

Divided Highway Begins announces a physical separator ahead. Divided Highway Ends announces that the separator is going away. Check which end of the diagram contains the divider before deciding what lies ahead.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. After the divider ends in Pennsylvania, where should you keep your vehicle?

  1. On the right side of the centerline.
  2. In whichever opposing lane has less traffic.
  3. Along the middle of the entire pavement.

Answer: A. On the right side of the centerline.

The handbook warns of two-way traffic and directs you to remain right of the centerline.

2. What change does Pennsylvania’s Divided Highway Ends warning announce?

  1. A new median begins immediately.
  2. Opposing directions will no longer have the physical divider ahead.
  3. The road will become a one-way street.

Answer: B. Opposing directions will no longer have the physical divider ahead.

The divided section is ending, so you must expect oncoming traffic on the next roadway.
