Meaning

Divided Highway warns that opposing traffic will be separated by a median or physical divider. The road changes from an undivided layout to separate roadways for the two directions. It does not mean that your current road is ending or that the divider is about to disappear.

What to do

Pennsylvania guidance directs you to the right of the median or divider. Anticipate the separation before reaching its end. Identify the roadway carrying your direction rather than treating both sides of the median as alternatives you can choose between.

Where it is used

The federal manual recommends this warning on the approach to a physically divided highway section. It is not the sign used to announce a junction with a divided road. At the actual end of a median island, Keep Right can identify the required side to pass.

A sign to tell apart

Divided Highway Ends warns of the opposite change: the physical separation finishes and you continue on a road carrying traffic both ways. Look at whether the symbol introduces a divider or removes one. In Pennsylvania, the ending requires attention to approaching traffic across the centerline.
