Meaning

Signal Ahead warns of a traffic light at the approaching intersection. A hill or bend may keep the light and its queue out of view. The warning lets you prepare for the traffic control before you can judge its current indication.

What to do

In Pennsylvania, slow on the approach and be ready to stop when necessary. Look for a line of vehicles as well as the light. Even a light that has only just changed to green may have traffic waiting beneath it, so green in the distance is not a promise of an empty path.

Where it is used

Federal standards require advance traffic-control warnings when the main control cannot be seen far enough away for drivers to respond. They also allow a warning for extra emphasis when visibility is adequate. The sign alerts you ahead of the signal; it is not the signal that assigns your next movement.

A sign to tell apart

Stop Ahead warns of a stop sign, while Signal Ahead warns of a traffic light. With Signal Ahead, prepare for a stop if the light or queue requires it. With Stop Ahead, begin preparing for the complete stop required at the upcoming stop sign.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. You see Signal Ahead on a Pennsylvania road. What should you do?

  1. Slow and prepare for a possible stop.
  2. Stop immediately beside the warning sign.
  3. Accelerate to reach the light before it changes.

Answer: A. Slow and prepare for a possible stop.

The sign gives advance notice of a traffic light and potentially stopped vehicles. Reduce speed and assess the signal and queue.

2. A Pennsylvania traffic light ahead has just turned green. Why might vehicles still be stopped beneath it?

  1. A green light always prohibits movement for several seconds.
  2. Traffic from the previous red phase may still be waiting to move.
  3. Signal Ahead means the light cannot be used.

Answer: B. Traffic from the previous red phase may still be waiting to move.

A queue can remain when the light first turns green. Continue checking the traffic ahead instead of assuming the road has cleared.
