Meaning

Stop Ahead warns that a Stop sign is coming up. Pennsylvania notes that a curve, hill or another obstruction may hide the control from view. A queue may be waiting beyond what you can currently see.

What to do

Ease your speed down and prepare for the upcoming stop. Look for the back of a waiting line as well as the Stop sign itself; a hidden queue may be the first thing you reach.

Where it is used

The warning precedes the primary control. Federal rules require it when the control cannot be seen soon enough for a driver to respond, and also allow it for added emphasis where visibility is adequate.

A sign to tell apart

Stop is the control you must obey at the stopping location. Stop Ahead gives earlier notice. Pennsylvania’s Stop rule requires a complete stop, while its advance-warning guidance tells you to begin preparing before reaching that control.
