Meaning
Yield Ahead warns that a Yield control is coming up. The federal manual uses this advance notice where the actual control is not visible early enough, and allows it for extra emphasis too. The warning and the Yield control serve different locations.
What to do
Slow and prepare to give way at the upcoming control. Virginia says to be ready to stop, allowing other vehicles, people walking and people cycling to pass safely before proceeding.
Where it is used
Look for this warning on the approach to the Yield sign, especially where the control is difficult to see in time. It gives notice before the point where you must assess traffic and yield.
A sign to tell apart
Stop Ahead announces a Stop control; Yield Ahead announces a Yield control. Virginia groups both as warnings to slow and prepare, but its Yield rule allows you to proceed after giving way when the path is safe.
