Meaning

Circular Intersection warns of a circle or roundabout ahead. It identifies a junction where traffic circulates, rather than an ordinary crossroad with straight paths through the center. Pennsylvania includes this diagram among its intersection warnings.

What to do

Approach cautiously and look for circulating traffic. Pennsylvania requires an entering driver to give way to vehicles already in the circle; choose a suitable opening before entering.

Where it is used

The warning is placed before the circular junction. Under federal guidance it should be used where an approach has a posted or statutory limit of at least 40 mph. An optional word plaque can identify a roundabout or traffic circle.

A sign to tell apart

Cross Road depicts an ordinary intersecting road, while Circular Intersection depicts circulation around the junction. Pennsylvania warns drivers to inspect each intersection arrangement in advance instead of assuming the road continues straight through.
