Meaning

Crossroad warns that another road intersects yours ahead. Vehicles may enter your road or turn across your path there. The warning is about the junction and its possible conflicts; it does not replace the signs, signals or right-of-way rules that govern the intersection.

What to do

PennDOT tells drivers to approach intersection warnings cautiously, look ahead and be ready to reduce speed when needed. Search for vehicles that could join or cross your path. Do not read the symbol as a promise that crossing drivers will stop or leave you room.

Where it is used

The sign comes before the intersection so you can recognize the junction before reaching its conflicts. Warning signs provide time to decide whether speed or path needs to change. The cross symbol describes the road connection; the actual traffic controls at the junction still matter.

A sign to tell apart

A T-intersection warning describes a road that meets another without continuing straight through. Crossroad describes a crossing junction. Both call for extra attention to vehicles entering or turning; identify how the roads connect before deciding which paths could conflict with yours.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. How should you approach an intersection warning in Pennsylvania?

  1. Assume crossing traffic must stop for you.
  2. Maintain speed without searching the side roads.
  3. Look ahead cautiously and prepare to slow when needed.

Answer: C. Look ahead cautiously and prepare to slow when needed.

Intersection warnings identify possible conflicts with other vehicle movements. Look ahead and adjust when necessary.

2. Why do Pennsylvania intersection warnings show how the roads join?

  1. To help you anticipate the junction and other vehicle movements.
  2. To guarantee that every approach has a stop sign.
  3. To grant your approach priority over all traffic.

Answer: A. To help you anticipate the junction and other vehicle movements.

The sign helps you recognize the road layout and potential conflicts. It is a warning, not a grant of priority.
