Meaning

Side Road warns that another road joins the one you are using. The pictured branch identifies the side from which traffic can approach. Alabama’s right-branch example means a side road enters from the right.

What to do

Search the approaching junction for vehicles entering or turning. Pennsylvania advises extra care at intersection warnings and a readiness to reduce speed when the situation requires it.

Where it is used

The warning appears before the intersection so you can anticipate joining traffic. The federal manual says the diagram should reflect the general shape of the roads at that junction.

A sign to tell apart

A T-Intersection warns of a different road arrangement: your road does not continue straight through. Side Road shows a branch joining your continuing road. Alabama explains the T arrangement as a required choice of left or right.
