Meaning
Dead End warns that a single street stops without connecting to another street. Alabama describes this as a street without an outlet. Read it as information about the route ahead: it does not identify a through connection to the next road.
What to do
Check whether that street serves your destination before entering. If you need a through route, use the warning to choose another intersecting street rather than continuing toward the closed end.
Where it is used
The federal manual places this warning near the street entrance, or far enough before it to let a driver choose the nearest intersection instead. The sign need not stand at the physical end of the pavement.
A sign to tell apart
No Outlet can describe a group of connected streets with no second exit. Dead End describes one street that terminates without meeting another street. A neighborhood may contain several intersections and still have no outlet.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. An Alabama street carries a Dead End warning. What should you expect?
- Only trucks must leave the street.
- The street has no through outlet.
- A divided highway begins after the next intersection.
Answer: B. The street has no through outlet.
The warning describes a street that ends without a connection to another street.
2. You need a through route and see Dead End before turning. What is the warning helping you decide?
- Whether passing restrictions have ended.
- Whether opposing traffic has a separate roadway.
- Whether to choose a different connecting street.
Answer: C. Whether to choose a different connecting street.
Advance placement gives you a chance to avoid entering a street that cannot carry you through.
