Meaning

Emergency Vehicle warns of responders entering or crossing the road. Florida describes the need to watch for those movements. Recognizing the warning gives you time to search for a responding vehicle, while its actual lights or siren may require you to yield and stop.

What to do

In the Pennsylvania scenarios here, an approaching siren or the specified flashing emergency lights require pulling to the curb or roadside and stopping. After one responder passes, check for another before resuming. The first vehicle may be part of a response involving several vehicles.

Where it is used

Federal standards pair this warning with Emergency Signal Ahead before emergency-vehicle traffic signals. Where no such signal exists, the manual permits it before an emergency-vehicle station. The companion message helps identify whether you are approaching a special signal or a location where responders may enter.

A sign to tell apart

Truck also warns of vehicle entry, but it does not identify an emergency response. The Emergency Vehicle warning prepares you for a responder whose siren or flashing lights can create a specific yielding duty. Read the symbol and watch the approaching vehicle’s actual signals.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. In Pennsylvania, an emergency vehicle approaches with a siren. What should you do?

  1. Pull to the curb or roadside and stop.
  2. Continue at the same speed until it reaches your bumper.
  3. Stop only if a warning sign is also present.

Answer: A. Pull to the curb or roadside and stop.

An approaching siren triggers the handbook’s yielding instructions. Move aside and stop rather than waiting for a roadside sign.

2. One emergency vehicle has passed you in Pennsylvania. What should you check before starting again?

  1. Whether the next traffic light is green.
  2. Whether another emergency vehicle is approaching.
  3. Whether your radio volume is low enough.

Answer: B. Whether another emergency vehicle is approaching.

A response may involve more than one vehicle. The handbook explicitly says to check for another responder.
