Meaning
Keep Right tells you which side of an island, divider or other obstruction to use. Pass the feature on its right. This is guidance about your path around a particular feature, rather than a general instruction to turn right at the next street.
What to do
In the Pennsylvania handbook example, direct your vehicle to the right of the island or divider. Read the sign together with the feature it marks. Do not steer to the left of the island simply because that path looks shorter or currently has no traffic.
Where it is used
At the start of a median, federal standards place Keep Right close to the end that approaching traffic reaches first. It can also stand on or just before an obstruction. The placement helps identify the object you must pass on the right, instead of a distant turn.
A sign to tell apart
One Way identifies the permitted direction of travel along a road. Keep Right identifies the side of an obstacle to pass. Both use directional information, but they answer different questions: which way the road carries traffic, and which side of the divider your vehicle belongs on.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. A Keep Right sign marks a divider on a Pennsylvania road. Which path should you take?
- The left side of the divider.
- Either side if no vehicle is approaching.
- The right side of the divider.
Answer: C. The right side of the divider.
Keep Right directs traffic around the divider on its right side. An empty road does not change that path.
2. What does Keep Right describe in the Pennsylvania handbook?
- The side of an island or divider to pass.
- A mandatory right turn into the next street.
- Permission to overtake on the shoulder.
Answer: A. The side of an island or divider to pass.
The sign directs your path around a traffic island or divider. It is not a turn-only instruction.

Federal sign and assembly options
Federal designs include word-message versions with arrows and a narrow version for a small median island. These are design alternatives for directing traffic around a feature; their meaning still depends on which side the sign tells you to use.
