Meaning
No Turn on Red removes the usual option to make a permitted turn after stopping at red. Wait for green instead. In Pennsylvania, the restriction matters for right turns and also for the otherwise permitted left turn between two one-way streets.
What to do
A complete stop and an empty crossing do not authorize a red-light turn when this sign applies. Remain stopped through the red phase. Check the sign even at a familiar junction: Pennsylvania’s conditional permission for turning on red specifically depends on there being no sign prohibiting it.
Where it is used
PennDOT describes the sign on the near roadside and near the signal across the intersection. Federal guidance places it by the appropriate signal head. This pairs the prohibition with the light whose red phase it controls, so include nearby signs in your signal check.
A sign to tell apart
No Right Turn prohibits the right-turn movement itself. No Turn on Red addresses the signal phase during which a turn is prohibited. The distinction is useful once green arrives: continue reading any movement restriction rather than assuming that removal of the red phase makes every turn available.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. You stop at a Pennsylvania red light with No Turn on Red posted. No traffic is approaching. What should you do?
- Turn right after checking again.
- Wait for a green signal.
- Turn right if you have waited several seconds.
Answer: B. Wait for a green signal.
The sign removes the red-light turning option. A clear crossing does not override it.
2. You are turning left between two Pennsylvania one-way streets. How does No Turn on Red affect that turn?
- It still prohibits the turn during red.
- It applies only to right turns.
- It allows the turn if you stop twice.
Answer: A. It still prohibits the turn during red.
The otherwise permitted one-way-to-one-way left on red is subject to the posted prohibition too.
