Meaning
Added Lane warns that a joining road supplies a new lane. Drivers entering at that point do not have to merge immediately into an existing lane. Pennsylvania distinguishes this arrangement from its Merge warning.
What to do
Recognize the new lane instead of assuming that the joining traffic must squeeze into yours at the junction. Use the warning to understand how the two roads meet; it does not announce a reduction in the existing lane count.
Where it is used
The sign appears before the roads converge without a required merge. Federal guidance seeks a position visible from both approaches; where that is impractical, each approach should have its own warning.
A sign to tell apart
Merge warns of traffic joining the existing roadway stream. Added Lane means the entering road continues in a new lane at the junction. Do not read the two diagrams as the same lane arrangement.
