Meaning

Chevron Alignment points along a sharp change in the road’s direction. PennDOT says the road bends toward the chevron. Several panels can trace the same curve, giving you guidance through the bend rather than warning of a new intersection at each panel.

What to do

Use the sequence to recognize and follow the road’s path while keeping your vehicle in its lane. PennDOT notes that chevrons through a sharp curve are especially useful in darkness or reduced visibility. They supplement preparation for the curve; do not wait until the last visible panel to decide how to approach it.

Where it is used

Federal standards install chevrons along the outside of a turn or curve, oriented toward approaching traffic. They are alignment guides, rather than object markers for barriers or guardrail ends. A line of chevrons describes the curved path and should not be read as a row of separate obstacles.

A sign to tell apart

Curve is advance notice of a bend; chevrons can continue through it. PennDOT describes an advance curve warning together with several chevrons along the curve. The first gives preparation time, while the repeated panels help show the path as you negotiate the change.

  1. In the direction indicated by the chevrons.
  2. Always opposite the chevrons.
  3. Only toward a road entering from the side.

Answer: A. In the direction indicated by the chevrons.

The chevrons point along the road’s bend. They provide alignment guidance.

2. When does Pennsylvania say chevrons throughout a sharp curve are particularly helpful?

  1. Only on a bright, straight road.
  2. At night or when visibility is poor.
  3. Only after leaving the road.

Answer: B. At night or when visibility is poor.

The repeated signs help show the turn when the road is harder to see.
