Meaning
Do Not Enter tells approaching drivers that they must not go into the road or ramp from that direction. The restriction concerns entry into a one-way movement. It is not an instruction to stop, check for a gap and then continue into the opening.
What to do
At the Pennsylvania locations described in the handbook, do not drive past this sign into the street or ramp ahead of you. Recognize the restriction before choosing your entry. A ramp that appears to lead toward your destination can instead carry vehicles toward you.
Where it is used
Expect the sign at the entry point where a driver might mistakenly turn into a one-way street, divided highway roadway or ramp. Federal guidance faces it toward the potential wrong-way entry. PennDOT distinguishes this position from Wrong Way, which is farther along the street or ramp.
A sign to tell apart
Wrong Way reinforces the same problem after an incorrect entry: it is farther down the one-way road or ramp. Do Not Enter aims to prevent that entry in the first place. Treat both as warnings that your intended direction conflicts with the road’s permitted traffic flow.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. You face Do Not Enter at a Pennsylvania ramp entrance. What does it require?
- Do not drive onto the ramp from that direction.
- Stop, then enter if no vehicle is visible.
- Enter only after signaling.
Answer: A. Do not drive onto the ramp from that direction.
The sign prohibits entering from the direction you are approaching. A stop or an empty ramp does not remove the restriction.
2. Where does PennDOT place Do Not Enter compared with Wrong Way on a one-way street or ramp?
- Do Not Enter is farther along after Wrong Way.
- Do Not Enter is at the beginning; Wrong Way is farther along.
- Both signs only mark pedestrian crossings.
Answer: B. Do Not Enter is at the beginning; Wrong Way is farther along.
The entry sign is intended to prevent the wrong turn. Wrong Way provides another warning farther into the restricted direction.
