Meaning

The U.S. Route shield identifies a numbered U.S. route. In PennDOT’s example, the number 22 identifies U.S. Traffic Route 22. The number names the route; it is not a speed instruction, an exit distance or a promise that your destination is that many miles away.

What to do

Read the shield with any companion panel. PennDOT illustrates WEST as the direction of travel, JCT as an approaching junction, and an arrow showing a turn needed to remain on the route. Following a route can require a turn even though you keep the same route number.

Where it is used

The federal standard uses this shield on U.S. routes and in route-sign assemblies on roads that intersect them. That is why the same number can appear either along the route or while you are approaching it. A companion JCT panel distinguishes an upcoming connection from simply identifying the road beneath you.

A sign to tell apart

One Way controls the permitted direction of traffic along a road. A U.S. Route shield identifies a route, while a WEST panel describes your travel direction on it. Do not treat a compass-direction panel as proof that the entire road carries traffic in only one direction.

Practice with explanations

These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.

1. In PennDOT’s route-marker example, what does JCT above the U.S. 22 shield tell you?

  1. You are approaching a junction with U.S. 22.
  2. The speed limit is 22 mph.
  3. U.S. 22 is closed ahead.

Answer: A. You are approaching a junction with U.S. 22.

JCT identifies the approaching route connection. The shield number names the route, rather than a speed.

2. PennDOT shows U.S. 22 WEST with a supplemental right arrow. What does the assembly tell you?

  1. The route becomes one-way immediately.
  2. You will turn right to stay on U.S. 22 West.
  3. The next exit is 22 miles away.

Answer: B. You will turn right to stay on U.S. 22 West.

The arrow identifies the turn needed to continue following the signed route and direction.

State source coverage

Handbook coverage and sample questions do not prove that a sign will appear on your exam. Even a published test scope cannot guarantee an individual exam question.
