The handbook says a driver-training permit expires five days after the holder’s 18th birthday, or after 180 days for people age 17½ or older. The current young-drivers page instead says expiry is at age 18 for ages 14½–17½; the five-day difference is unresolved.
Driver-training permits expire at age 18 for people age 14½ to 17½; 180 days from issuance for those age 17½ or older.
Minimum permit age
14½ for a driver-training permit before age17; the Class D instruction permit is a separate route from age17.
Requirements under 18
Under-18 applicants need school enrollment or completion evidence and a liability signer. A signer who cannot attend the county office may use an accepted power of attorney.
Driver’s education
For licensing before age 17, complete an approved driver-training course: 30 hours in class, six observing in a training car and six driving with an instructor. Applicants under 17 need a driver-training instruction permit to attend the course.
