Test options and applicant conditions: Driver Service Centers normally use computer testing, with paper tests in limited cases. Selected centers offer oral tests by appointment for applicants with a learning disability or who cannot read. An applicant younger than 18 needs a physician or educational specialist statement documenting the condition or disability for an oral test. The department provides a certified sign-language interpreter for a deaf applicant requesting an oral test.
Test format scope: The handbook requires alcohol and other drugs to account for at least 25% of knowledge-test questions. Its examination overview describes roughly equal shares of 25% for signs/signals, safe-driving principles, road rules, and drugs/alcohol.
Online test format: Questions: 30 Passing percentage: 80% Time limit (minutes): 60 Languages: English, Spanish Eligible ages: 15–17
Online testing: Applicants ages 15–17 may test online with a parent or legal guardian supervising through Tennessee Proctor ID. The proctor registers on a separate compatible phone or tablet and may supervise at most five applicants. The applicant uses a computer or tablet, not a phone. If testing reaches 30 minutes, the proctor must scan the QR code to authenticate again; tests finished before then need no second authentication. The department may require another exam at a service center even after an online pass.
