Meaning
Do Not Stop on Tracks addresses a dangerous queue position: your vehicle must not wait in the railway crossing. It can be needed even when no train is immediately visible, because traffic beyond the rails can leave a vehicle trapped where trains need clearance.
What to do
Florida tells drivers in heavy traffic to check the space beyond the tracks before entering. Wait on the approach if your whole vehicle cannot fit on the far side. The handbook also identifies a marked clearance area around the tracks where stopping would put the vehicle in a train’s path.
Where it is used
Federal guidance recommends the sign where queues could extend onto the crossing, including traffic waiting for a junction beyond it. The sign can be on the near or far side, whichever is more visible to approaching drivers, and may be repeated on both sides of the tracks. Its location is about preventing a trapped queue.

A sign to tell apart
The crossbuck identifies the crossing and requires yielding to trains. Do Not Stop on Tracks adds a queue-control message: do not enter a position you cannot clear. An approaching train is not the only reason to wait before the rails; insufficient space on the far side matters too.
Practice with explanations
These are original learning questions based on the cited handbooks. Read each answer and its explanation below.
1. Traffic is backed up beyond a Florida railroad crossing. What must you check before entering?
- Whether your vehicle can fit completely beyond the tracks.
- Whether the driver behind you wants to continue.
- Whether the rails look dry.
Answer: A. Whether your vehicle can fit completely beyond the tracks.
Do not enter unless there is room on the other side. A queue can otherwise trap your vehicle in the crossing.
2. What do Florida’s white connecting-X dynamic-envelope markings identify?
- A place to wait while a train passes.
- The train-clearance danger area where road users should not stop.
- A parking area for vehicles waiting to cross.
Answer: B. The train-clearance danger area where road users should not stop.
The markings highlight the space needed for trains to pass safely. A stopped vehicle there can be struck.
