Minimum permit age
15 years and 6 months
Requirements under 18
A parent or legal guardian signs consent for an under-18 application; an emancipation court order can replace that consent.
Driver’s education
For a driver’s license before age 18, complete a state-approved driver-education program and hold the permit at least nine months. This is a licensing requirement after obtaining the permit.
Future education rule (not current)
From January1,2027, never-licensed ages18–20 need driver education and a90-day permit hold before licensing; under18 rules and age21+ rules remain distinct.
